Pamphlets

The Serampore Pamphlet Series consist of some 1600 bound pamphlets from 1625-1915, which were collected by John Clark Marshman, eldest son of Joshua and Hannah. His father being one of the College founders, John was for many years editor of the Friend of India, proprietor of the Serampore Press and official Bengali translator. The core collection is formed by 95 volumes of pamphlets on political, social and ecclesial issues, received from Governor William Bentinck, who resided at Government House at Barrackpore until 1835. These unique pamphlets, became part of the College Library before 1874, when the Press was given up and the Friend of India sold to Robert Knight of The Statesman. Miss. Katharine S. Diehl, a qualified American Bibliographer, carried out the preparation of a catalogue of the College collection of Indian imprints up to 1850. Supported by a grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc., U.S.A., and with the aid of Hemendra Kumar Sircar, she undertook the Herculean task of documenting the entire collection during 1961-62. Diehl’s description was published by the Council of Serampore College as "The Carey Library Pamphlets: A Catalogue" in 1968, which has become the reference work of these Pamphlet series, which was extended to 1915 in recent years. Each pamphlet is digitized as a separate file with an extensive description based on K.S. Diehl's excellent work.
