The Friend of India first appeared in May 1818 as a Monthly publication. Vols. I-XII (1818-1828). Edited by Joshua Marshman, it ran first as a Monthly with short news items and from 1820, as a Quarterly with longer essays, Vols. I-IV (1820-1826). After a break of a number of years, it continued as a Weekly publication (1835-1873). Our selection is now incomplete, and only four volumes of the Monthly and Quarterly remain, with many of the Weekly bound volumes of the Friend of India too fragile to digitize.
